Emperor of the Eight Islands Review ♡

Another book review, probably terrible but I really wanted to share how I felt after reading 😊 I hope you all enjoy!

Rating: ♡♡♡♡.5/5

Synopsis (from goodreads): An ambitious warlord leaves his nephew for dead and seizes his lands.

A stubborn father forces his younger son to surrender his wife to his older brother.
A mysterious woman seeks five fathers for her children.
A powerful priest meddles in the succession to the Lotus Throne.
These are the threads of an intricate tapestry in which the laws of destiny play out against a backdrop of wild forest, elegant court, and savage battlefield. Set in a mythical medieval Japan inhabited by warriors and assassins, ghosts and guardian spirits, Emperor of the Eight Islands by Lian Hearn is a brilliantly imagined novel, full of drama and intrigue – and it is just the beginning of an enthralling, epic adventure: The Tale of Shikanoko.

Review: I want to start this off by saying Lian Hearn is such an amazing writer! This whole novel felt so lyrical and dream-like, it flowed so well that I had to force myself to stop reading 😅 It really felt like I was reading an epic about a real Japanese warrior, it was like something you would find in mythology texts (which I’m an avid reader of). Something I really appreciated was that Lian Hearn didn’t go into too much detail on her sex scenes, she really only gave the emotions and feelings that come with/resulted from the action.

There are so many characters, which is needed for a story such as this, and the characters who had their POV written were so distinct and individual to the person. It didn’t feel like I was reading the same POV over and over again, which was amazing since some writers seem to have a hard time writing different POVs. The only problems I had were that there didn’t seem to be much of a description for the werehawks (which may be a result of my forgetfulness) and that the battles didn’t seem to last long. Now back to the werehawks, I had the hardest time imagining what they should look like. Did anyone else have that problem? Anyways, I really recommend that you guys check this series out, it’s really good! I hope to get the next book soon so I can see what happens and make a review for it 💖
